Peep a track from the legendary underground lyrical monster, Canibus‘ forthcoming (on June 22) EP, Full Spectrum Dominance. We were blessed to be able to hear an advance preview copy of the full EP courtesy of album Executive Producer, Domingo who’s releasing it via his Thatshiphopmusic.com digital release platform. Here’s our take on it:
While we enjoyed Full Spectrum Dominance overall, if we were gonna make one quibble about the record, it would be that Canibus’s style, which can feel a tad overly earnest in large doses, started to sound the same by the end. The EP is a lot of rappity rap, “centrifugal, scientifical” multi-syllabic type rhymes, basically what he’s always been known for, but when it doesn’t change up much from track to track, it began to feel a little repetitive after a while.
Production-wise though, the beats were solid, nice chunky boom bap drums with some cinematic, expansive music over top. For those who’ve always wanted to hear Canibus make a record where he came with some consistent spit-fire rhymes over some real quality beats, this should pretty much make them happy.
Fave/best tracks (in no particular order): The Odds, Black Lithium, Anagram Phoenix, Ghetto People.

New joint from the UK’s GAIKA from his forthcoming (July 27) album. Peep the science in this PR blast:
GAIKA presents his debut album, BASIC VOLUME, after captivating listeners with a blistering pair of acclaimed, self-released mixtapes Machine and Security and Warp-released EPs SPAGHETTO and The Spectacular Empire. Now GAIKA’s darkly magnetic blend of gothic dancehall and industrial electronics has expanded into his most far-reaching work yet.
BASIC VOLUME is a sprawling yet cohesive album that devours genres and spits them out, tangled around personal tales of love, loss and rebellion. With BASIC VOLUME,GAIKA continues to simultaneously push the boundaries of electronic music and the legacy of the UK’s indelible soundsystem culture, inviting listeners into a sonic world of his creation. The 15 track collection is co-produced by GAIKA, with additional production from similarly forward thinking contemporaries, including SOPHIE, Dutch E Germ, Dre Skull and DADRAS, Aart as well as previous collaborators including Jam City, Nick Leon and Frank Ocean’s Blonde and Endless collaborator Buddy Ross.
BASIC VOLUME is today announced by the explosive arrival of ‘Crown & Key’. A muscular rallying-cry, ‘Crown & Key’ is accompanied by truly captivating, cinematic visuals, directed by Paco Raterta. Raterta says “The first time I heard ‘Crown and Key’, it reminded me of the funeral chants in the chapels of the village where I grew up, and it opened up all the biblical nightmares I use to have as a kid. If you know Christian visuals, they are very grotesque, stiff and very beautiful at the same time. The camera movement is inspired again by my memories as an altar boy, it’s basically a POV memory of mine, entering the church, carrying the bible and seeing everyone around, but the faces were always never clear, I can feel like they are looking at me, but I don’t see them at all.”
How’d we miss that Toronto rapper, Preme (the artist fka P. Reign) just dropped a brand new album, Light Of Day a month ago??! Record features Offset of Migos, Ty Dolla $ign, Lil Wayne, DJ Khaled, Partynextdoor, YG (on a track produced by DJ Mustard) and Post Malone . Not only is it stacked, feature-wise but it’s pretty decent as well. Kind of crazy that this album is not getting more burn or are we just out of it and not feeling the buzz? Major miss on everyone’s part if I’m right though, sad…
We were major, major fans of The Autobiography (missed it? Hit the jump…) so new music by Vic Mensa is very much welcome.

It’s all about Jorja Smith nowadays but here’s some more soulful-ish vibes coming out of the UK too (although vocally it reminds a little of Lily Allen in parts). Ya dig though??
