New Music: Punks Jump Up – Blockhead

MP3: Punks Jump Up – Blockhead (Symbol One Remix) by Hypetrak

Official plug:

The London duo Punks Jump Up will set the winter alight with their brand new single Blockhead, out on Kitsune end of Jan-2011.

This percussive, rhythmically hypnotic dance song, accompanied with a quirky & driven bass line is a tribute to the terrifying looking but yet emotionally soft & musically talented monster on the sleeve of the record. The track came about when Punks Jump Up tried to imagine what it would sound like if this creature, made out of rubble & metal, would be let lose in a recording studio armed with drumsticks and lots of percussive instruments, as if Punks Jump Up were wearing white coats recording a sonic experiment in which Blockhead & the percussive instruments were the guinea pigs. The track Blockhead is what they came up with and they have allegedly said “this is the true definition & sound of our friend Blockhead”. Every time Punks Jump Up has played this song in clubs the crowd totally changes dance style & starts making jerky, spastic dance moves along with the music, as if the dancers get somewhat possessed while hearing it. Play it and you will see!

An edited version of Blockhead was featured on the latest Kitsune Maison 10 compilation but it is now being released in it’s full length glory along with remixes by Zombie Nation, Hey Today!, In Flagranti, Stopmakingme & SymbolOne. The tracks have already been played to death by 2ManyDJ’s (who used it as a staple track in their Under The Covers tour, in full effect with the trade mark 2ManyDJ’s animations in background), Zombie Nation, Mixhell, Kissy Sellout (BBC1), Andy George (BBC1), Eddy Temple Morris (XFM).

Blockhead is a much needed vitamin injection, jam packed with energy to shake off the winter gloom and a great kick-off for 2011!

New Music: Toro Y Moi x Cloud Nothings – Still Sound / Should Have

Carpark Labelmates Toro Y Moi and Cloud Nothings have teamed up for a new split 7″ featuring 100% exclusive and previously unreleased tracks. Toro Y Moi contributes “I Will Talk To You” while Cloud Nothings contribute “For No Reason.” The single is in celebration of their Spring tour which will find Cloud Nothings opening for Toro Y Moi on the majority of the dates. The single drops on vinyl and digitally on March 29 but will be available prior to that exclusively at the merch table at the shows they are playing together, starting on March 11.

In advance of that split 7″ release, the two groups have let a couple promo tracks go to warm things up. Here’s the Toro Y Moi one, “Still Sound”:

Toro Y Moi Bio:
Columbia, South Carolina’s Chaz Bundick (aka Toro Y Moi) rose to the fore of the music blogosphere in summer 2009 when he and a few peers made their hazy bedroom recordings the most talked-about sound of the season. Critics across the board took notice of the range of his compositions, and his debut album, Causers of This, showcased his ability to make elements of Brian Wilson’s pop, 80s R&B, and Stones Throw hip-hop coalesce into a distinct sound that’s as suitable for a dancefloor as it is a pair of headphones.

When Chaz first signed to Carpark Records, the plan was to release two records in 2010– one electronic and one with live instrumentation–and although it didn’t quite fit into the same calendar year as his debut, Underneath the Pine is that latter offering. This release sees him following the same creative urges to completely different ends. Having spent the year listening to film composers like Ennio Morricone and François de Roubaix, Bundick returned to his home in Columbia, the birthplace of many Toro tracks of yore, to bring his new ideas to fruition. The result of these sessions is an album evocative of R. Stevie Moore’s homespun ruminations, David Axelrod’s sonic scope, Steve Reich-ian piano phrasing, and the pervasive funk of his first record. Underneath the Pine announces a new phase for an artist whose talent defies classification.
