Meant to post this new video from local Toronto MC/spoken wordsmith/activist, Ian Kamau a couple weeks ago but you know, life….
Track from the One Day Soon album. Listen to it in FULL here.
Help me out here: are people really f-cking with this broad?
I’m not saying these girls, from Vancouver, BC on Canada’s left coast, are ace spitters or anything, but this is different sounding and, I dunno about y’all but I need more of that in my life, personally. Hit the jump for another track, “I Know What Boys Like” (interpolating the hook from the classic new wave song by The Waitresses….)
This is one of the more creative tracks and videos I have been sent recently. I reached out to the dude, who reminds of a youthful Mike D, after checking this out to tell him I dug it but did he know there was already an MC named Tree and this was his response:
“Yeah, I recently just heard about him! That’s fine I don’t have a problem with there being 2 trees [Ian joke: 2Treez!]. Tree is just my middle name and I came to conclusion that it’s a living organism, no person, company, artist act can own such, ha-ha. However, it does say Tree on my birth certificate so it’s not even the name I picked out, it’s just the one I was given at birth. my parents were both hippy musicians that met in a flute class and told me that they literally used to play flute together up in the trees and nobody could tell where the music was coming from. But that’s not how I got the name Tree though. My mom gave me the name Oliver Tree, taken from the olive tree branch in Noah’s arc, when the dove found an olive tree branch and brings it to Noah as a sign that the storm was over and there would be a calming. My mom named me that as peace offering because she had stopped talking to her parents for 7 years then by the time I was born she wanted it to be over and she wanted her parents back….”
So how could you not be a creative being with that kind of back-story??!
