Illmatic XX is the 20th anniversary re-release of Nas‘s iconic debut album that collects remixes that have only been released on 12″, demo tracks, unreleased cuts and freestyles from radio shows that have never been officially released before. Is this an essential purchase? Depends on how much of Nas fan you are. I already dropped a grip of money for the gold-plated deluxe edition last year and have all the 12″s (albeit in storage) so I’m not trying to drop more money to buy music I already have again but for you youngun’s this might serve as a nice introduction to an album that many view as the pinnacle of hardcore, underground, East Cost hip-hop creativity & artistry.
For those of you whose pockets might be a tad light though, today we are offering you a chance to win a vinyl copy of the album right here on The Kitchen. All you have to do is the following:
1. Follow me on twitter at @Stellaskid (so I can DM you in the event that you win) then…
2. Tweet: “Hey @Stellaskid: I wanna win @Nas #IllmaticXX vinyl courtesy @Sony_Music & @DiffKitchen” [note: you do not need to include the quotes when you tweet your contest message]
I will select a winner on Monday, April 21 at 12 noon EST. FYI: you must be a resident of Canada to be eligible to win. In the meantime, check out a couple of the new tracks from Illmatic XX, “I’m A Villain” and “The Stretch Armstrong & Bobbito Show on WKCR, October 28, 1993”, below:

ATL-based Black EDM crew, Watch The Duck drops the video for their latest single, “Girlfriend” featuring T.I.! Big tings a g’wan! I’ve liked these kids since they dropped their first official single, “Poppin’ Off In Atlanta.” That video though: watch the duck, indeed, lol!
Thanks to D.O. for lacing me with his latest album, Down Home when I bumped into him at the Slakah the Beatchild album release event last week. The five tracks (including the video for the intro track, “Still In It”) and the rest of the album were produced by Canadian MC, Classified. D.O.’s comment about his goals with this album: “I think this album is important because its about the Black Canadian experience. Not sure how much Canadian music has ever touched on that.” Not sure either but I’m curious to peep his take on that concept. The title track in particular gets deep into this concept although that last line in the second verse gets an “eh yo!”
Fun side note: D.O. and his collab partner on “Never Gets Old”, the OG Godfather of Canadian hip-hop, Maestro Fresh Wes are both motivational book authors. Check out their books here: Stay Driven (D.O. Gibson) | Stick to Your Vision (Wes Williams aka Maestro Fresh Wes)
Down Home will be in stores next week (4.22.14).
