5. Jigg – Keys to the City

[I know this a freestyle over a Nipsey Hussle mixtape (?) beat but Jigg absolutely MURDERS it and the video is so ig’nant but compelling a view at the same time that I had to include this anyway. My list, my rules. Ya dig?!]

3. Meek Mill – I’m a Boss feat. Rick Ross

This was (I think?) the only track that I somehow managed to not post before it made it on this list which is pretty stunning considering this was arguably the, or at least one of the, biggest street/club tracks of 2011. “F-ck a blog, dawg ‘cos one day we gon’ meet!” Seriously Ross, please accept my deepest, sincerest apology for sleeping as I am more than willing to concede that this was a monstrous record all around: beat, production, lyrics, vocal performance etc. etc. An honorary shout-out to Ace Hood also for the related record, “Hustle Hard” which, while it didn’t make this list, was no doubt as big an anthem and one of the biggest records of last year too.

2. Jose James – Coltrane (Dear Alice)

COLTRANE (DEAR ALICE) by josejamesworldwide

As I declared when I picked this for my Couch Sessions Best of Top 5, this flawlessly produced jazz track is the closest evidence for the existence of God I found in music all this year. I seriously don’t even feel worthy of being allowed to listen to it when I play it, it’s that sublime a work of art to me. Absolutely stunning.

And our #1 favorite record for 2011 here at the Kitchen was….

1. Kelly Rowland – Motivation

I know this list was like 90% hip-hop but this slice of futuristic R&B-pop was perfection, which never, ever got stale sounding to me even though I heard it about a gazillion times on the radio, in clubs and just about everywhere else, and head and shoulders better than a very worthy crop of hip-hop records this year. It was also about 10x better than anything on Beyonce‘s 4 album and for that latter reason alone I would have had to salute Ms. Rowland and make this my song of the year. Underdog wins again!

So that’s it. What y’all think? Good list? Interesting, horrible, am I out of my mind? I miss something you thought I’d love or absolutely should have been on here regardless of the criteria I set up? What??! Let me know in the comments if you care enough one way or the other. And thanks as always for riding with The Kitchen through the ups and downs this site has experienced since its inception in 2003. We’ll keep doing it as long as we have passion for art, culture and life in general so that could (should) be for a long foreseeable time. Oh, albums are up next and Happy New Year again – LET’S GET IT for 2012!!!

    • Never checked it out ’til now. If this is the one in question [http://hu.lk/nv53iyhg5wrc], thought it was cool but it’s definitely the original for me. Thought it was a song of the year contender from within a few weeks of me hearing it for the first time and nothing ever really came close to challenging that status in my view.
