[MP3] De La Soul – Remove 45 Feat. Chuck D, Mysonne, Pharoah Monch, Posdnuos, Styles P & Talib Kweli

De La Soul

The right song for the right moment. The legendary De La Soul drop a devastating anti-Donald Trump screed with the help of Public Enemy‘s Chuck D, Mysonne, Pharoah Monch, Styles P & Talib Kweli.

WE’RE BACK!!!

We had technical diffciulties and were too busy to figure out how to fix them. No worries, we’re back. For now.

We know that blog-centred media platforms are a little old hat so we’re strategizing on how to re-envision what to do with this URL. Meanwhile, check out our recently re-focused efforts on the Instagram and Stories there for the latest music heat.

And here’s a playlist we created to celebrate the last week’s WAVESTREAM online music festival that, Kitchen capo, Ian co-curated. Enjoy!

[In Memorium] NIPSEY HUSSLE: August 15, 1985 – March 31, 2019

Been a tough, tough couple weeks: first a good friend, who’s one of the best DJ’s I know here in Toronto, lost his wife, then Ranking Roger of the The (English) Beat, a childhood musical hero of Kitchen capo, Ian, passed away and now this: Nipsey Hussle, one of the brightest lights in the new school of hip-hop has had his life taken away in its prime, he was only 33. ⁣

Nipsey was smart, a leader, and a hard worker, dedicated to his craft as an artist and a community activist. Every album he released was better than the last. His most recent, Victory Lap was a masterwork and a favorite of ours from last year. ⁣These losses all hurt in a different ways but Nipsey’s really hits hard for what a loss it is for the culture. ⁣

Check out Nipsey’s last music release (Music Video + MP3), “Racks In The Middle” featuring Roddy Ricch & Hit-Boy here and see how hip-hop has been reacting to his untimely passing on the Kitchen IG. #ripnipseyhussle

[News] Toronto Rapper Smoke Dawg Murdered in Long Weekend Shooting

We will concede that, while we were familiar with local up-and-coming Toronto rapper, Smoke Dawg on a very cursory level (we were following him on Soundlcoud, at least), it was his untimely demise this weekend that, sadly, compelled us to share his music here at the Kitchen for the first time.

A quick backgrounder for those not knowing:

Smoke Dawg first gained notoriety for his role on the street anthem “Still” and a remix of French Montana’s “Trap House”. In 2016, he collaborated with Skepta on “Overseas” and last year, he was an opening act on Drake’s Boy Meets World European tour. Just this week he dropped a new song called “Fountain Freestyle” to preview his debut full-length project, Struggle Before Glory, which was slated for release later this year.

As I said in a Facebook post about this news, in the wake of the news of the deaths of XXXTentacion and Jimmy Wopo this is sobering news to learn of from right here in our home town. The creators within our culture should not be dying like this! R.I.P., Smoke Dawg…..
