[MP3] Rippps – Hue

From the Rippps’s Hue EP that dropped August 3 via Alpha Pup Records:

Since it’s Collaboration Week on RBMA, we’re thrilled to host the premiere of a new musical partnership between two Academy alumni. Dutch keyboardist and pianist Niels Broos and UK electronic music producer Hyroglifics first met at RBMA Montréal in 2016 and are now coming together as Rippps for an EP on Alpha Pup Records. The record’s title track, “Hue,” is emblematic for its kaleidoscopic, rubbery bounce, blending slick synth work with deft electronics. You can hear the influence that working with RBMA studio team member Thundercat had on the duo. As Broos recalls: “He is one of my musical heroes. I remember him walking around the studios and sometimes he would come in and start vibing with us. I found this super inspiring. It also gave me some healthy nerves that made me push my musical ideas a lot. Jamming with him also gave me a lot of new musical ideas, and since he’s such a genuinely funny dude, it made us remember to also put humor in our music – something that I feel you can hear in the EP. Some of the songs are so over the top in their quirkiness, it’s almost funny at some points.”

[MP3] Gorillaz – Lake Zurich

We won’t lie. We didn’t get all the way through the latest album by Gorillaz but we liked this joint from it. Y’all??

[MP3] Yuksek & JD Samson – Don’t Even Try

And yet another weekend party starter from the Brooklyn label, YouTooCanWoo. Melody in vocal reminds us of “That’s Not My Name” by The Ting Tings. Are we crazy for saying that??

[MP3] Family of the Year – Hold Me Down (Autograf Remix)

[MP3 + Music Video] Ralph – Girl Next Door Feat. TOBi

Perfect for Summertime! Nice track by Toronto singer, Ralph and Kitchen favorite, TOBi. Peep the PR game:

Toronto based artist RALPH is an alluring pop enigma. Drawing from her disco and synth-laden roots, as well as her personal musical heroines Sade, Stevie Nicks and Donna Summer, her rose colored alt pop brims with a perennial sense of adolescent love. On the strength of her debut self-titled EP — and standouts “Cold To The Touch” and “Tease” — the budding star (née Raffa Weyman) has tracked over 10 million Spotify streams to date.

After delighting with the release of her steamy, summertime heater “Girl Next Door,” a duet with fellow Toronto upstart TOBi, she returns today with a pastel & sunshine-soaked video.

The clip finds RALPH and TOBi in a surreal summertime seaside oasis, with the singer cooing from atop a jungle gym, buried in the sand up to her head, and on a second floor balcony alongside a bevy of her squad pals. The clip was helmed by Ally, a director/producer, who has worked on videos for the likes of Janelle Monae, The Vamps, Ariana Grande, as well as a writer on the hit series, Schitt’s Creek. Ally is now developing an original comedy series with its creator, Dan Levy and Imagine Entertainment.

The track was inspired by RALPH’s own musical ascent, and mirrors the struggle rising artists often face in remaining grounded. When she reached out to the emcee to collaborate, he coincidentally had a song idea of his own that fit the context perfectly. “It was beautiful,” she recalls. “Exactly what I imagined the song to be.” RALPH’s own family and friends inspired the rest. “I keep having them joke around and say ‘I hope you don’t forget me when you become famous’ or ‘one day you’ll be too famous to hang out with me’ which is ironic because it’s friends and family who keep you grounded,” she adds. “If you ever develop an ego and start acting like an asshole, they’re the ones who remind you of who you really are. That was the idea behind the lyrics, talking about potential change but acknowledging that you’ll always be the same person no matter what.”

Also enjoy the remix by another Kitchen fave, GOVI after the jump…
