Happy holidays, word to Charlie Brown!
MP3: DJ Jazzy Jeff – Xmas Time feat. Ayah [hulkshare download link]
This I’d never heard before! From the homie, DJ Paul E. Lopes as spotted via his Facebook – cheers, Paul:
“This is from a one sided white label 12″ that I got in London, UK – time-long ago! Mica Paris re-works “Should’ve Known Better” in dedication to helping Somalia at Christmas, with a few guests. There isn’t any info on the record so maybe a few of you UK Soul aficionados can help identify the vocalists and crappy rapper (Courtney Pine on sax?)”

I would have included some links to some appropriate charities but I wouldn’t know which were legit or effective or not (besides the biggies like the Red Cross, obviously). So maybe just do your own research if you’re feeling like being generous because life in Somalia ain’t much better now than when Mica & co. originally cut this record plus this is the season to be particularly mindful of the plight of our less blessed and less fortunate fellow man.
This one was an unexpected but pleasant surprise…
“With the holidays sneaking up, The Hush Now is in the giving spirit. The Boston gents dropped a free holiday single before the Thanksgiving break, aptly titled “On Holiday.”
The track boasts a swinging Jobim-esque groove supported by a horn section that will have you hooked after the first listen. The choruses open to a gallop, with soaring vocals longing for a paradise far away from the usual holiday trappings. A place where you can drink, ‘martinis in the sun,’ and ‘Ho Ho Ho and Rum tum tum.‘”

Hit the jump for a video featuring what I presume is their more usual sound….
Had to post this one now that the holiday season has kicked off post-(US) Thanksgiving. I might be betraying my age here for those who don’t already know me or my background, but Germ Free Adolescent by Poly-Styrene‘s iconic first punk/new wave band, X-Ray Spex was one of the first albums I got as an Christmas present back when I was a little nipper so I was very psyched to get this.
I could get into what an amazing album that was and why she was one of my early idols but the official plug does a better job of it than my lazy ass would so hit the jump to check it out and to watch the video and also for a link to download a FREE mp3 download of this teaser single to get people warmed up for her brand new album, the first new music from this legendary singer in many, many years, after the jump.
william devaughn – be thankful for what you’ve got by NJEric65
Maybe a Thanksgiving blog cliche but still a great soul song that articulates a sentiment apropos for today and life in general. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
