I watched the latest Bond flick, SPECTRE a couple nights ago with my dad. I thought the quality cast was wasted on a mediocre film whose plot was far too incredulous for me to suspend my belief, even for a Bond flick. I’m not sure using this superior unreleased theme instead of the generic-ass one they picked by the way overrated Sam Smith could have saved it for me.
Per Phoenix‘s Soundcloud page:
Phoenix release “Alone on Christmas Day”, a cover of a long-lost Beach Boys holiday track from 1979 that was never formally released. Phoenix’s version features a little help from Bill Murray, Jason Schwartzman, former “Letterman” musical director Paul Shaffer, and New York Dolls’ David Johansen, and appears in the Netflix original holiday special, A Very Murray Christmas, directed by Sofia Coppola. All profits from the song will go to UNICEF.
Sick of the new Adele already? You might could wanna try new artist, Belau whose music is, give or take, like a hipster variation on what she does to my ears.
If your read the Kitchen regularly, you already know who Keita Juma is. If you’re not familiar with Toronto’s experimental pop trio, Absolutely Free though, think a slightly darker, more leftfield take on Toro Y Moi‘s music and that’ll give you somewhat of a sense of their sound.
The bottom line though, we are giving away one pair of tickets to see both live at the Music Gallery this Sunday (Oct. 18) as part of the X Avant X festival so you’d be out of your mind not to try and win them. We’ll make this pretty simple:
1. Follow me on twitter at @Stellaskid (necessary so I can DM you in the event that you win)
2. Tweet the following message exactly: “Hey @Stellaskid: I wanna win tickets to see @FreeAbsolutely & @kjforshort at @musicgalleryTO in Toronto on Oct. 18” (note: no quotation marks needed, just the message inside the quotation marks is fine)
Simply RT-ing any tweets I do promoting this contest does NOT enter you to win. The contest will close at 6PM EST on Saturday (Oct. 17). The winner will be notified via twitter DM. Winner will also be responsible for their own transportation to the show.

(Thank you to David Dacks and the Music Gallery for helping to facilitate this contest with free tickets.)
Ironically I was just playing the new Tame Impala Currents album (which I love) because this track reminds me of them a little with a bit of Toro Y Moi in the mix too. Slightly outside the wheelhouse of what we’ve been posting at The Kitchen of late but we do rock with rock if it tickles our taste buds. It is what we grew up on after all (I mean, have you peeped the inspiration for our blog name? I know the haters have!)
