At the Embassy Night Club to benefit awareness about prostate cancer and the Black community.
Canadian Black men are 65% more likely to get prostate cancer than white men and almost three times more likely to die from the disease. This is no joke! In fact, someone in my immediate family was just diagnosed with prostate cancer shortly after I first became aware of this event and is going in for surgery before the end of this month, that’s how serious it is. So of course I will be attending this. If you’re in the GTA and can make it, I urge you to do the same – not only are you getting a night to top-notch entertainment but you are also supporting an extremely worthy cause. Not in the area or can’t make it? Please retweet or post this to your Facebook page (social sharing button now back in place on the site!). Every new impression helps. See the flyer above and below for more details:

I’ll let the official plug speak for itself and add only that Theo 3 was repsonsible for one of my favorite hip hop songs of last year, “How I Flow Pt. 2” feat. Tona & Andreena Mill so you should probably just play this on the strength:
“Toronto Hip Hop heavyweight Theo3 (DJ Eclipse’s 2010 Sleeper song of the year “It’s Theo 3”) and much sought after producer, Phat Tony created the eclectic and richly textured “2 Week EP” during 14 days in December. Phat Tony constructed a living, breathing musical landscape while Emcee Theo 3 slid in the upstairs studio everyday after work as Coordinator of the newly opened Parkdale Youth Space in downtown west Toronto. The result is a descriptive and genre blending menu of social awareness, tongue in cheek braggadocio and topical rhymes laid out over an eye popping array of soulful musical productions. The deft mixing touch of legendary Toronto DJ and producer Scam of Time Bandits music gives the whole “2 Week EP” a new dimension of fullness and Universal appeal.
2 weeks to create, 2 weeks to mix and 2 weeks from the Beatz to the Streetz graduate showcase on January 25th 2011, Phat Tony & Theo3 release “the 2 week EP” with the goal of raising $1500 for Toronto youth program Beatz to da Streetz. Purchase it now at yungsanta.bandcamp.com for $3 and up!
Beatz to da Streetz is a youth-led arts program that aims to provide a safe and supportive space for youth ages 16-24. The program leverages the powerful connection between young people and music to promote opportunities for creative expression and self-discovery, building life skills opening access to professional mentorship, education and income generation for marginalized youth ages 16-24. The program reintegrates youth with their communities and gives supports for achieving long-term livelihood development.”

Via the UK’s Guardian:
“DJ Kool Herc, one of the founding fathers of hip-hop, is allegedly “very sick” and cannot afford hospital treatment. The man who invented breakbeats is without health insurance and needs help, his friends say, to pay for surgery.
“[He] who we call the father of hip-hop, Kool Herc, is not doing well,” DJ Premier revealed on his Sirius XM radio show this weekend. “Since he’s very sick and has no insurance … [he] needs to pay his bills so he can get out of hospital.”
Kool Herc, real name Clive Campbell, was an integral figure in early hip-hop, developing DJ techniques and encouraging breakdance culture. But although he was a major influence on artists such as Grandmaster Flash and Afrika Bambaataa, Kool Herc was a DJ, not a record producer, and did not score any hits. Consequently, Premier said, the 55-year-old cannot afford surgery.
DJ Kool Herc’s condition has not been disclosed.”

This is crazy! I wouldn’t have had a career doing what I did if it wasn’t for this guy! In fact, If, anyone who made a living in the hip hop game over the past couple decades, would never have been able to do that had it not been for the creative genius and innovations of Clive ‘Kool Herc’ Campbell.
Donations for Kool Herc can be sent to: Kool Herc Production, P.O. Box 20472, Huntington Station, NY 11746.
[UPDATE (2/1): dude had kidney stones??! I mean not to downplay that because I’ve actually had them too and even minor incidents can be painful like a muh-f-kcer, but I kind of feel like dupe for even having done this post now…]
