From the forthcoming posthumous Lioness: Hidden Treasures album dropping on December 5th. My view? STRAIGHT FIYA!!! “Our Day Will Come” is a great cover of a 1963 track by Ruby & the Romantics. And I swear Nas is sounding very Illmatic-era flow on “Like Smoke”, no??
I’ve seen some carping online that the release of some of this unfinished material is a disservice to Amy‘s memory and legacy, but sub-standard Amy is still better than many singers performing at the peak of their abilities and me personally, I’ll take whatever I can get. Enjoy…

Download MP3: Mickey Factz & DJ Mehdi – Cruisin’ | Alt. download link: hulkshare
“2 days after Dj Mehdi died, Mickey Factz decides to unearth a record he recorded with the world renowned Dj. Mickey was recording an album for Need For Speed: Nitro & wanted to use the Mehdi produced K-1 Attack. Due to sample clearances, the both decided to create something new. “Cruisin'” was the outcome. With beat drops & cuts from the producing team FKi, Mickey navigates through the song like a racer. The death of Dj Mehdi is a sad one but should be celebrated and remembered. This track is a testament to that.
R.I.P. Dj Mehdi”
Had to post this as Mickey’s the homie and I got to see one of Mehdi’s final sets while in New York back in July for the Mad Decent Block Party.
“Today marks the 10th year of the passing of our beloved Aaliyah. For everyone that came up with her music, this one especially hurt.
Following her career was watching a flower in bloom. Aaliyah’s sultry voice, mature demeanour, and provocative lyrics at so young an age captivated millions. Hers was the archetype for so many teenage women coming into their own. She encountered controversy early in her career, and shrugged it off with remarkable grace, and emerged with a new sound, identity, and stronger resolve. Her track record remained virtually flawless. As Aaliyah grew up, so did we.
It was never hard to find something you could love in Aaliyah, someone who had lived in the spotlight from day one. She was a regular girl even while walking down the red carpet. Aaliyah could turn on the star power at will, but found pockets of fun in a business that took itself so seriously. She kept her circle devoid of hangers-on and yes men. Her family was her main priority and support system. The spoils of celebrity were a bonus but not a priority. Aaliyah kept herself balanced because she was in her element as an entertainer.
Aaliyah’s life was tragically cut short at the height of her fame, and is comparable with Kurt, Jimi, Janis, and now Amy as artists who we all knew had long thriving careers ahead of them, but now we can only speak of beautiful fleeting moments we had during their time with us.
This is a mix of her key singles and album cuts. Songs that became anthems for us while we crushed on someone heavy, were in the midst of infatuation, embroiled in argument, or were dealt the crushing blow of love lost. Aaliyah explains her mindset at the different times of her artistry and career throughout the mix.
Forever with us. Rest in peace, Babygirl.”
Has it really been 10 years already??! Baby girl is still missed, but Toronto’s DJ Mensa does her justice with this tribute mix:

From the moment I heard Amy Winehouse on the Nas-powered “In My Bed” on Trevor Nelson’s radio show and blogged about it seven years ago, I’ve been a fan of what was probably one of the most interesting and talented artists in the music game over the past ten years. As a kid who grew up appreciating mod-soul, British pop music and hip-hop, Amy Winehouse embodied all those aesthetics effortlessly. No mere pastiche or tribute act, she took the past and fused it with the now to blaze a creative and exciting new trail in music that artists like Adele have subsequently taken advantage of traveling.
But what started out as a semi-charming side-story, cute but feisty London Jewish chick with jazz-soul pipes par excellence likes her drink and to get into scraps (“She’s more rock n roll than most rock dudes!” I used to say), clearly and quickly became a self-destructive train-wreck that nobody seemed to have any idea how to pull the emergency brake on. Like Tupac before her, it was clear where this story was going to end eventually. That it came to this inevitable conclusion so much sooner than later doesn’t make it any less sad or even shocking.
Somehow I thought maybe she’d pull off a miracle and get clean but real life is… well, real. And now sadly, she is a part of an esteemed fellowship that no-one likely wishes really existed, The 27 Club and that is music’s and all of our losses. Truly, they broke the mold with that one there. Amy Winehouse, your spirit will be missed. May you R.I.P.
But as they, she will live on through her music so here’s a couple of my favorite Winehouse moments:
