Who says The Kitchen never hooks you up?? This is a good one! Wanna win a chance to see the cult soul singer, Teedra Moses live in Toronto for Canadian Music Week at The Main Ingredient party w/ the usual resident Djs (Mensa, Agile and Sean Sax) in support at Revival?
As I said when this show was announced, she is fan-f-cking-tastic live. The epitome of what soul music is, especially in an era where you hear everything but — ‘electronic’ soul, R&B that sounds like EDM and rappers singing more than singers — actual honest-to-goodness soul music. Trust me when I say, when you hear Teedra go at it live which is, honestly, the best way to experience her, she really makes you believe she lived it. This is grown woman business we talking about here, aight??!
Anyway, here’s how to win:
1. Follow me on twitter at @Stellaskid (so I can DM you in the event that you win) then
2. Tweet: “Hey @Stellaskid: I wanna go to the @CMW_Week @TeedraMoses show May 10 at The @TMIPARTY at @RevivalBarTO” [note: you do not need to include the quotes when you tweet your contest message]
I will select a winner at random on Friday May 9 at 12 noon who will be notified via DM on twitter (hence the necessity for you to follow me). In the meantime, check out this new track from Teedra, “All I Ever Wanted” sampling the Camp Lo classic, “Luchini”
Another one from Tru Thoughts (and Inertia)! Nice cover of James Blake‘s “The Wilhelm Scream” refashioned as a hammond-powered, Southern soul-style, slow burner by Australia’s The Bamboos. Not mad at this!
This Al Green cover and two other tracks were left of the 1996 original release of this album (which I have although it’s in storage right now :/ ) but will be on the Live at the Jazz Café, London: The Complete Show reissue coming out this Tuesday (March 25). Personally, I’m still waiting for a DVD of the Voodoo tour to be released though. The show at Radio City Music Hall stands to this day as the best concert I have ever seen.
One last one for the weekend. This soultastic take on chopping and screwing a track (in this case Sade‘s “Sally”) is a perfect way to end to a Sunday evening.
Don’t know much about this one tbh. Just popped up on my soundcloud feed because I follow Giles Peterson‘s Bronswood Recordings on there. It’s a corker though. More info here from the post page:
The second single from Zara McFarlane’s highly acclaimed second album ‘If You Knew Her’, ‘Open heart’, is released digitally on the 28th April.
Flipping the script, on Zara’s beautiful song Swindle (Deep Medi Musik) takes ‘Open Heart’ to new directions, adding his trademark sound that has seen him transcend the worlds of grime & dubstep with his jazz inflected keys, sub-heavy riddims and raw percussion.
