Never been the biggest fan of Gangsta Gibbs although I thought his debut mixtape, Midwestgangstaboxframecadillacmuzik was solid and stood the test of time as a modern era, underground street classic (to my ears, at least). But I saw Gibbs perform this past summer at TIME Festival here in Toronto and he destroyed it so I was curious when he started dropping a grip of new music recently. Happily the music has been more than solid! In case you’ve missed the deluge, this will serve as a summary post of the highlights. Leggo….
First, getting trappy!
Getting loose over the breakbeat classic, “Nautilus” by Bob James with Black Thought of The Roots on the assist:
More trap-tastic vibes (rhyme content, not beat-wise. Music’s actually kind of soulful tbh courtesy of Toronto’s Boi-1da and Frank Dukes on the production):
Gangsta Gibbs with Gucci Mane and E-40:
Hit the jump for three more!
ICYMI Toronto’s Jazz Cartier was the first artist I wrote about in my article, 10 Canadian Artists You Need To Know Besides Drake…. Here goes his latest single.
Long time readers know I’ve been a fan of ‘Mz Chawls‘ forever, since I came across her epic track, “Think of You.” This new song, from her forthcoming new album, due early next year is a fantastic mix of old and new. A 60s soul stomper power by a classic hip-hop drum break. Love this track!
Recent music from the homie and #DK11 album alum, Jai Nitai Lotus. The first doesn’t feature any Jai vocals, it’s a remix of the Travis Scott track, “Upper Echelon” featuring T.I. and 2 Chainz that he gave the jazz treatment (I told y’all this cat “was infused with the spirit of jazz”). Here’s his blurb for the second track, “Standoffish” which he blasted out as a “song to get the Halloween spirit going!”:
This joint is part of my ‘One Off’ series (listen to the 1st collabo here: “You I”). “Standoffish” features my fellow MTLIENS, Shogun & CeasRo
Peace and Creativity is a must!
New school T.dot MC I wasn’t up on until the homie, Erikson put me on game.
