Not necessarily our thing, per se but like that kid, Scarlxrd out of England, this is no doubt some different ish and… well, you know the name of the site!
We will concede that, while we were familiar with local up-and-coming Toronto rapper, Smoke Dawg on a very cursory level (we were following him on Soundlcoud, at least), it was his untimely demise this weekend that, sadly, compelled us to share his music here at the Kitchen for the first time.
A quick backgrounder for those not knowing:
Smoke Dawg first gained notoriety for his role on the street anthem “Still” and a remix of French Montana’s “Trap House”. In 2016, he collaborated with Skepta on “Overseas” and last year, he was an opening act on Drake’s Boy Meets World European tour. Just this week he dropped a new song called “Fountain Freestyle” to preview his debut full-length project, Struggle Before Glory, which was slated for release later this year.
As I said in a Facebook post about this news, in the wake of the news of the deaths of XXXTentacion and Jimmy Wopo this is sobering news to learn of from right here in our home town. The creators within our culture should not be dying like this! R.I.P., Smoke Dawg…..

Another week, another premiere of more great, new music by yet another great act from right here in The 6ix. We’re truly in a Golden Age of music in Toronto. Honors is a relatively new group we just got up on but they are quickly becoming one of our favorites. Here’s the background on their excellent new two song single release which is out today and officially premiering here at the Kitchen:
Toronto alt-r&b collective HONORS, who have already allotted over 20 million streams and reached #1 on Spotify’s Global Viral chart, lean into moody atmospherics on their new release. Led by an equal parts sleek, sultry, and ultimately infectious single called “X2UO”, it also comes equipped with a thunderous b-side cut called “Control”. The two tracks offer a glimpse at what’s to come on HONORS’ forthcoming debut EP which is slated to drop this fall, not to mention what they’ll bring to the live circuit as they head out on the road in support of NoMBe.

I’ve been sleeping. Tory been busy!
Grammy-nominated artist Tory Lanez unveils “Talk To Me” with Rich The Kid, the track is the first from a forthcoming release, a second new project in addition to his previously announced Spanish language project El Agua.
Tory recently debuted the first song from El Agua—out later this year—“Pa Mi,” a collaboration with reggaeton star, Ozuna. The song features Lanez singing and rapping in Spanish for the first time ever.
“Talk To Me” and “Pa Mi” mark the first new music from Lanez since the release of his sophomore album Memories Don’t Die earlier this year.
BTW: that crazy puppet video up top is for the track Tory did with fellow 6ix residents, Keys N Krates.
