Cruel Summer by Msmoveonup on Mixcloud
Some throwback soul and jazz w/ a little hip-hop and trip hop in the mix for your Sunday listening pleasure.
This did the rounds a few weeks back but I’ve been so busy with work and other projects I totally missed it until I heard it when I played Common‘s new album, Nobody’s Smiling when I saw it in the new release section of RDIO (which I was happy to see!)
The album’s getting mixed response from what I’ve seen so far but I like it although my first impressions are that it does feel a little schizo. The first half sounds like Com’ was inspired to get back on his experimental Electric Circus/Universal Mind Control sh-t after getting inspired by Yeezus then the second half is him back on his more radio-friendly boom-bap/soulful vibe. That’s just my take on a couple initial listens though. I’m gonna live with it more before I render a final judgement. This song is a BANGER though! A nice update on Golden Era-style hip-hop.

Cats ain’t gonna wanna admit it (or will be happy for me to take all the blame credit) but I was the first blog on the original version of this song, true story! #OGstatus #DK11
