This dropped a while back but I never had a chance to post it. This was the first track to drop from a compilation, the debut full length release titled Saint Heron from Solange Knowles new Saint Records label which was officially released yesterday. The comp features Sampha, Jhene Aiko, Cassie and of course, Solange who we’ve long been supporters of here at the Kitchen. It’s also on Kelela‘s own Cut 4 Me mixtape which you can listen to in full HERE.

I have long been a fan of Smith & Mighty, a Bristol, UK-based production duo that were progenitors of the breakbeat, bass-heavy sound that presaged everything from Massive Attack and Portishead to the UK street soul of Soul II Soul, drum n bass, Shut Up And Dance, broken beat and even, at a stretch, the breakbeat R&B template that uptown DJ, Ron G created on his mixtapes and that Diddy took to the masses with Mary J. Blige and his Bad Boy label.
When I DJ’d for a living back in the mid-2000’s, I played this Burt Bacharach & Hal David cover regularly back then as well as their cover of another Bacharach & David classic, “Anyone Who Had a Heart” (titled “Anyone”). This is music I will love until I die and the reason why I do this blog still. Y’all dig?
As I said over at XclusivesZone.net where I swiped this from: “Lyrics: ig’nant as all hell; Track overall: banger status!” Who the hell is Beni Haze though??!
Is this on the Marshall Mathers LP 2??! Crazy! This is inspired by the early 90s baggy jeans, wheat Tims and camo M65 jacket era of hip-hop. Recognize! Shout to Black Moon, you know “They Got Cha Opin” back in the day
