“Released in March of 2005, Beanie Sigel‘s The B. Coming stands as the titular bookend of Roc-A-Fella Records’ Dynasty Era. Recorded between Sigel’s guilty verdict and his trip up north, The B. Coming highlights the meshing of the Philly emcee’s Biggie-like swagger with Scarface‘s patented paranoia rap. Despite the wide array of guest artists, the album is nonetheless a personal narrative of a man in solitude, expressing his existential qualms. Sigel’s diary scripts are well-accompanied by the record’s sound spectrum of 70s and 80s soul and rock. Production highlights include the sampling of Raphael Ravenscroft and Klaus Doldinger‘s wailing saxophones on the respective tracks “Feel It in the Air” and “Tales of a Hustler Pt. 2”, Natalie Cole‘s sweet crooning on “Oh Daddy”, and the string arrangement of David Crawford on René & Angela‘s “My First Love”, lifted by Ty Fyffe for the Rell-assisted “Change”. The album concludes with a harrowing re-imagining of Bon Jovi‘s “Wanted Dead or Alive” as Sigel ponders life on the lam. Enjoy this sample set to one of my favorite albums of the aughts. Turn it up!!”
Co-sign Ivan on this one. The B.Coming was definitely one of my favorite albums and I still think it stands as one of the great underrated hip-hop albums of the last decade.

MP3 Stream (no download): Constellations – The A to Z of Dennis Coffey: A Mix By House Shoes by Strut
New mix by one of the keepers of the J. Dilla legacy, DJ House Shoes. Read on for what it’s all about:
“Leading up to the foundational Motor City guitarist’s new self-titled solo album, Detroit’s own House Shoes takes us on a journey through Dennis Coffey‘s history of funk. Including the psychedelic b-boy soul of Coffey’s 70’s solo material, classic recordings on which he recorded as a sessions musician, hip-hop cuts which have sampled his material, and even a couple of sneak peaks at the new album’s music, Constellations is 45 minutes of straight heat, mixed by a master DJ intimately acquainted with Coffey’s legacy, and his future.”

Pleasant surprise from my inbox. Video directed by Lex.
“Singer and songwriter ReneeDion‘s sultry blend of jazz, R&B, hip hop and soul makes her a unique find in a sea of imitators. After sharpening her skills in Los Angeles, Chicago and Atlanta, the Ohio native is quickly becoming one of the most talked about new singers in alternative soul music. Having opened for artists Eric Roberson, N’Dambi, Jesse Boykins III and singing alongside Gordon Chambers [ed note: the homie!], she has earned her nu-soul stripes. ReneeDion’s jazz and hip hop improve style was displayed in the summer of 2010 in her mixtape series. Her debut album, The Rhapsody Inn, is produced by BJazz and Rob Riley of The Liquid Crystal Project, and will be released in March of 2011.”
