Dr. Dre x Snoop Dogg Video Faceoff: Kush vs. Nuthin’ But A G Thang
I was musing on this via twitter a couple days ago: here’s the new video by Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg & Akon for the official first single (aka the only single that hasn’t stiffed so far?) from the long-delayed, now almost mythic Detox album:
“The video for “Kush,” the first single from Detox featuring Snoop Dogg and Akon premiered yesterday (Friday, December 10th) on Vevo.com.
About the track “Kush,” which is available now, Dre says. “It’s a fun song, it’s hot and people seem to be loving it and that’s an exciting thing because I know if people are loving this song they’re going to really get into the record because this is just the tip of the iceberg.”
The Joseph Kahn directed video finds Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg in yet another classic video collaboration but Dre says” “It’s not like ‘getting together with Snoop again,’ we always stay in touch and Snoop is like my little brother so this is just what we do.”
Snoop Dogg agrees: “Dr Dre, that’s my big homeboy, that’s my big brother. He gave me my start. so whenever he calls me to come through and do what I need to I’m there for him. Akon’s part of the family too so this is what we do, we just make great music.”
Now compare that to the debut single, “Nuthin’ But A G Thang” from the legendary hip hop classic, The Chronic:
Then just marinate on the difference between those two songs (I’m not even gonna get into “Deep Cover”!) and where they may lie relative to each other on either the scale of hip hop awesomeness or hip hop authenticity (take your pick….)
Still excited for Detox??! I will say this, at least: I’d like to see a ‘Making of’ doc about the “Kush” video because technically, it looks amazing!

Trailer for the Canadian Indie Movie Let Him Be
In honor the 30th anniversary of the death of Beatles icon, John Lennon earlier this week (Dec. 8), here’s the trailer for this quirky, little indie movie Let Him Be which posits the question, what if Lennon actually survived or even staged the assassination attempt on his life by Mark David Chapman back in 1980?
“Two film students discover something uncanny on a tape found inside an old video camera bought at a garage sale in Northern Ontario. It contains a brief clip of an old man who bears more than a passing resemblance to an older John Lennon. Is Lennon alive and living? The two become fixated. Could it be him? It’s an absurd idea that they might have passed off if it were not for the fact that the man also sounds so much like Lennon. Did he stage his own death to live a life of anonymity in his second-favourite nation, Canada? The filmmakers decide to uncover the truth. With hidden body cameras, wireless cameras and surveillance cameras, the viewer gets to experience first-hand the possibility that history deceived us. Illusion and reality tangle and swirl on this remarkable journey of discovery.”
