546/MOU put me up on this stunning video by an artist who I first paid attention to because of all the hype surrounding her but was kind of nonplussed by what I heard when I went to see her live last Summer. Yet by year-end, her album, LP1 had totally won me over and become one of my favorites of the year.
Dropped right before Christmas (and right after D’Angelo‘s surprise album release). Judging by these, his next album, should be as fire as Kaleidoscope Dreams was.
Well, if you’re any kind of a D’Angelo fan, you already know what happened Friday. The release of Black Messiah, his long-awaited and long-anticipated third album and follow-up to the classic Voodoo was announced completely out of the blue and not only was announced but whose arrival we learned was more than imminent, coming out today! As you can imagine, all kinds of mayhem ensued. As the homie, O-Dub put it, dude basically broke the internet with this news. I was not immune although, if you can believe it after all my hyperbolic talk on Friday, I did not download immediately download the album at midnight last night and have been relying on snippets on iTunes and now Spotify (RDIO, what’s up??) until I can buy a physical copy. I’m old school like that. [update: after striking out at Sonic Boom and realizing physical copies might not be forthcoming for a while, I caved in and made Black Messiah my very first ever purchase on iTunes, which seems fitting]
Based on those snippets though, D’Angelo has not been shy about indulging his Prince inspirations and Black Messiah sounds like the funk-soul-rock masterpiece everyone was hoping for. Album of the Year already?? To celebrate this epoch-moving musical event, here goes “Sugah Daddy”, a track that’s actually been on YouTube as a live version from various shows around the world for the better part of two years now, which Red Bull let go yesterday as part of their “20 before 15” initiative.
It’s Monday so, appropriately enough, here goes another track from Tuku‘s Moonday Sessions: The Black mixtape. Enjoy
