The “Rain” track by Mick Jenkins is produced by Kaytranada. Both joints are super-solid though, no??
As I was saying on twitter the other day, for all my old curmudgeon friends who lamented how the sound of mainstream hip-hop veered away from the dusty crate diggin’ boom-bap sound of sampled breaks and loops, I would always tell them that everything goes in cycles and that their beloved 90’s hip-hop sound would come back into vogue, not when young kids discovered Tribe, Pete Rock and De La et al., but when one of those kids discovered those sounds and, inspired by them, made it their own.
I’m not sure it’s happened quite yet but Joey Bada$$ might be that kid I was talking about. Exhibit 1: his flip of A Tribe Called Quest‘s iconic “Scenario” beat for the “No. 99” track from his recently released official major label debut album, B4.Da.$$, produced by 90s hip-hop flag waver, Statik Selektah.
Will this album kick all the trap, drill and club electro sounds currently dominating clubs and radio to the curb? Not sure I really believe that but for those of you holding a candle up for that eventuality, maybe there’s a little bit more hope now?
Don’t underestimate the influence of Soulja Boy on the new school of Southern rappers like Migos and Rae Sremmurd, that’s poppin’ right now. Y’all act like he didn’t make a record that was the beat to freestyle over for a minute…
We posted the song a while ago but the excellent video for #DK11 album alums, Keita Juma and Brendan Philip collab track “Come Over” from Keita’s Chaos Theory album just dropped a couple weeks back so wanted to make sure we supported it here at the Kitchen as well. (BTW: we actually posted the video a while back on the DK Tumblr. Make sure you’re following us over there!)
